American history is being replaced with a polarizing version according to Woodson Center founder and president Robert Woodson. He was interviewed by Harvard Law professor and author Randall Kennedy.

Vice President Cheney spoke at the annual Weinberg Founders Conference about the history of the realtions of the United States with the Middle East and the struggle against radical extremists. He said that success depended on not just reacting but being proactive in protecting Americans through the use of international surveillance and interrogation. He said the those operations have been carried out with “the utmost regard for the civil liberties of American citizens.” Other areas of concern included Iranian interference in Iraq. He said that Iran would face “serious consequences” if it proceeded to build nuclear weapons.

President Obama spoke about changes following the completion of the Hostage Policy Review, including that the government would no longer threaten to criminally prosecute families of American hostages who paid ransom to terrorist groups. The president said hostages and their families “should never feel ignored or victimized by their own government.” The new policy also included better coordination and engagement with families of hostages, the creation of a Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, a hostage response group, and a new special presidential envoy for hostage affairs.

Ms. Couric interviewed former Governor Richards about her life as a woman in politics and about the current political climate. Among the issues she discussed were the Republican front runners for the 2000 presidential nomination, the possibility of a woman president, and civility in American culture.

Obama administration officials testified about the president’s plan to raise troop levels in Afghanistan as part of a revised strategy to disengage forces beginning in July 2011. Among the issues addressed were the current state of military efforts, regional security cooperation with Pakistan, and the capabilities of the Afghan government and security forces.
