President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden met at Case Western Reserve University for the first of three scheduled debates prior to the 2020 presidential election. Chris Wallace moderated the debate that was marked by many interruptions. Among other issues, Mr. Wallace’s questions concerned the Supreme Court, the federal response to the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, the candidates' records, civil unrest, systemic racism, and health care.

President Trump was diagnosed with COVID-19 one day after this debate, and the second debate was eventually canceled.

Secretary John King and other education professionals testified at a hearing on the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act. Members questioned witnesses on the rule-making process and a policy where federal funds are designed to supplement, not supplant, state resources.

The Senate convened and began a period of morning business.



Thereafter, the Senate is expected to resume consideration of H.R. 5684, the United States-Oman Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act.

It included footage of U.S. Capitol guide Peter Byrd talking about the Ohio Clock, which was being used as a metaphor for the October 1-16, 2013, federal government shutdown.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, co-author with Mark Warren of The Good Fight (Putnam: May 1, 2008), talked about his upbringing and his life in politics. Senator Reid grew up poor in Searchlight, Nevada, served as head of the Nevada Gaming Commission, and eventually made his way to Washington, D.C., as a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives. The guest interviewer was former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle.

Former Governor Romney spoke about the role of faith in public service and the place of religion in American politics. In his remarks, delivered to address possible misgivings about his Mormon faith by voters, he pledged to serve the common good and no single religion if elected president, while also advocating the importance of faith and religion in the public arena.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney concluded his three-nation overseas tour with a foreign policy address at the University of Warsaw Library. He talked about the United States and Poland’s relationship and praised Poland for its economic efforts to “stimulate innovation, attract investment, expand trade, and live within its means.”

Senator Russell Long talked about his upcoming retirement and his life in politics. He discussed how the Senate has changed. Long is the son of late Governor and Senator Huey P. Long. He also discussed his opposition to televising the Senate.
