Witnesses testified at a hearing on child sex trafficking. The hearing outlined the details of a bipartisan investigation of online sex trafficking, specifically looking at the practices of the classified advertising site Backpage.com. Carl Ferrer, the chief executive officer for Backpage, was requested to testify but failed to appear.

A House Energy and Commerce subcommittee held a hearing on combating online sex trafficking and reviewing the legislation that would allow states and victims to sue websites. Witnesses included the founder and CEO of End Slavery Tennessee and the assistant special agent in charge of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Earlier in November 2017, 22 people were indicted in Brentwood, Tennessee, on sex trafficking charges. Several stories of sex trafficking cases were shared, including Representative Pete Olson’s (R-TX) account of an attempted kidnapping of his daughter while she was studying abroad in South Africa.

The Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism held a hearing on counterterrorism efforts in North Africa. Two State Department officials answered questions on issues including ISIS activities and influence in the region, as well as efforts to combat cyberterrorism.
