The challenges the United States faced during the Civil War did not end at Appomattox. The process of Reconstruction spanned more than 10 years and the laws and practices instituted during this time period have had a lasting impact on American history.
Saturday, June 18 American History TV will be live from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for the annual Civil War Institute summer conference. Authors, historians and professors will examine topics such as freed people's refugee camps, General Grant's career after the Civil War, and Reconstruction in the North. We'll also hear conversations on the return of the Confederate veteran and the origins of the Lost Cause.
