Librarian Rob Cox talked about the importance of the Lewis and Clark journals in American history and examined the original manuscripts of 30 of their journals.
Hannah Crumme and and other Lewis and Clark University Library Archives and Special Collections staff highlighted a range of books and materials from Lewis and Clark's expedition in 1804-1806. Lewis and Clark made their way through the Portland area as they traveled west along the Columbia River in their quest to make it to the Pacific ocean. C-SPAN's Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their "2017 LCV Cities Tour" in Portland, Oregon, from May 6-12 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2.
Ralph Ehrenberg and Herman Viola talked about their book, Mapping the West with Lewis in Clark. They also displayed the original 1814 map that was created by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark after their exploration of the western landscape of the United States.
Native American contributors read from the book, Lewis and Clark Through Indian Eyes, published by Knopf. The late Alvin Josephy Jr. co-edited the book, and his daughter read from the introduction. The book is a compilation of nine essays from 10 descendants of the native peoples whose homelands were traversed by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, telling of the important role of Native Americans in the success of the trip and the expedition's long-term effect on the Native American people it encountered. The event began with an honor song rendered by the Singers of Northern Dakota. Roberta Conner is of Cayuse, Umatilla, and Nez Perce heritage and is the director of the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Allen V. Gary Lentz portrayed Sergeant Patrick Glass of the Lewis and Clark expedition, demonstrating medical practices used by the explorers during their 1804 cross-country journey. The Fort Walla Walla Museum in Washington hosted this event.
Brigham Young University Professor Jay Buckley taught a class about Lewis and Clark's expedition across the American West after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, he described their goal to map a route to the Pacific coast as well as to gather information on the people, flora and fauna in the new territory. This class was taught online due to the coronavirus pandemic and Brigham Young University provided the video.
