GRADE: 4th Grade SOCIAL STUDIES TEKS 4.3 C 3) History. The student understands the importance of the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas, and the annexation of Texas to the United States. The student is expected to: (C) identify leaders important to the founding of Texas as a republic and state, including José Antonio Navarro, Sam Houston, Mirabeau Lamar, and Anson Jones; ELA TEKS 4.12 B (12) Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--genres. The student uses genre characteristics and craft to compose multiple texts that are meaningful. The student is expected to: (B) compose informational texts, including brief compositions that convey information about a topic, using a clear central idea and genre characteristics and craft; VIDEOS: These 3 clips discuss who Sam Houston was and how he contributed to the Texas Revolution. Sam Houston helped acquire the Texas state in order to be part of the U.S. The fourth-grade students will answer the questions, attached below, as they watch these 3 clips. OBJECTIVE: The fourth-grade students will identify Sam Houston and compose an informational composition about the Texas leader after watching Sam Houston clips from C-SPAN. LESSON: The fourth-grade students will be introduced to General Sam Houston by reading the book " A Picture Book of Sam Houston", the teacher will explain his importance and what he influenced. The students will then watch these video clips and answer the questions attached below as they watch the video. The students will then compose an informational composition about Sam Houston. They will write about who Sam Houston was and his role in the Texas Revolution. The students will be provided a graphic organizer (attached below) in order to help them plan and convey information about Sam Houston in an organized and informative manner. Students will then be able to share their writings about Sam Houston amongst each other. TEACHER USE ARTICLE IS ATTACHED BELOW
