On November 4, 1979, more than 50 U.S. diplomats and public servants were taken hostage in the Tehran Embassy by a group of Iranian students. These students were part of a revolution in Iran. The hostages were held for 444 days and released on January 20, 1981. Jimmy Carter was President of the U.S. during this time.
