On This Day: The Battle of the Alamo

Upon winning its independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico began to expand its territory to the north. As the population in Texas increased, people in this area sought independence from Mexico to establish its own state. This led to increasing conflicts between Mexico and Texas. In December of 1835 as the Texas Revolution heightened, a group of Texas soldiers occupied the Alamo, a former Franciscan mission in San Antonio. On March 6, 1836, Mexican forces led by General Santa Anna, successfully attacked the Alamo which greatly impacted Texas' fight for independence.
