On This Day: The Golden Gate Bridge Opened

On May 27, 1937 the Golden Gate Bridge, a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, opened to traffic. The bridge crosses the channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, linking the city of San Francisco to Marin County in the north. From its construction through 1964, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world with span of 4,200 feet.
