On This Day: John Brown's Raid on Harpers Ferry

On October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown and his team launched a raid on a federal armory located in Harpers Ferry which was located in the state of Virginia during that time but is now the state West Virginia. The group hoped this would initiate a broader slave revolt. The raid was a failure but the event instilled concern of slave rebellions among slaveholders and inflamed tensions between the North and South. Karen Sherry, curator at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond explained the events that took place at Harpers Ferry in 1859. She focused on the role that Dangerfield Newby, a former slave, played in the failed attempt to start a slave revolt with weapons taken from the arsenal at Harpers Ferry.
