President Trump signed an executive order at the Utah State Capitol in Salt Lake City reducing the size of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments in Utah, which had been designated by Presidents Obama and Clinton. President Trump said the designations were classic examples of bureaucratic overreach and said he looked forward to returning control of most of the involved lands to local authorities.
In this lesson, students will examine the origin of the Antiquities Act, listen to a variety of perspectives on how these monuments impact different groups of people and determine for themselves how the government should move forward on this issue.
