On This Day: Emmett Till and the Rebirth of the Civil Rights Movement
Emmett Till was a fourteen-year-old African-American boy from Chicago, Illinois. While visiting his uncle in Mississippi, Till was brutally murdered after allegedly whistling at a white woman in a grocery store. On this day, September 3rd, 1955, Emmett Till was buried, and his disfigured body was showcased to the world upon his mother's deliberate decision to have an open casket funeral. Pictures from Till's funeral were published in numerous magazines and newspapers, reigniting a widespread passion for the Civil Rights Movement.
