Description

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex in educational settings. The law applied to any educational institution that received federal funding. This lesson has students learn about what Title IX does and explore its impact on gender equality today.

Procedures

  • INTRODUCTION:

    Have the students view each of the introductory videos in order to learn about the background of Title IX.

    • Describe educational opportunities for women prior to Title IX.
    • Explain the events that led to the creation of Title IX.

    • Why does Title IX apply to sports?
    • Explain the three-prong test relating to Title IX compliance in sports.
    • What were some of the consequences to the proportionality rule?

    • What was the initial purpose of Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972?
    • What does Ms. Fields mean by "psychological warfare?"
    • Explain how Title IX covers sexual harassment and assault.
