On This Day: The U.S. Invasion of Grenada

On October 25, 1983, U.S. and OECS forces landed on the Caribbean island of Grenada. President Ronald Reagan gave the order to invade the country at the request of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States based on fears of Soviet-Cuban militarization of the island and the execution of Grenadian Prime Minister Maurice Bishop. The conflict was one of the first major military operations after the Vietnam War. The invasion and U.S. victory resulted in the stabilization of Grenada and democratic elections in 1984.
