On This Day: Battle of Iwo Jima

During World War II, United States Marine forces landed on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima as part of a larger strategy to close in on the mainland of Japan. The operation to capture this island from the Japanese Imperial Army started on February 19, 1945. The battle went on for over five weeks. In the end, the United States saw more than 20,000 casualties, including almost 7,000 deaths. Approximately 18,000 Japanese soldiers were killed.
