On This Day: The Sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis

On July 30, 1945, the U.S.S. Indianapolis was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine. The ship and its crew had recently completed a top-secret high-speed trip that delivered parts of the atomic bomb that would be dropped on Hiroshima. Because of the secrecy and other factors, the surviving crew members were not discovered for almost four days. The sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis resulted in one of the deadliest naval disasters in U.S. history.
