This bellringer focuses on the accomplishments of three women who served as change agents in the early Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota (MN).

  • After the devastating tornado what did the Sisters of St. Francis and Dr. Mayo agree to, and how did this agreement form the foundation of what would become the Mayo Clinic?
  • Summarize the story of Edith Graham Mayo and detail the importance of her role in making the hospital renown for quality care. How is her story similar or different to medicine today?
  • Dr. Gertrude Booker Granger was the first practicing doctor at the hospital from outside of the Mayo family. What else was significant about her hiring? Do you think this was typical for hospitals across the country at the time? Why or why not?
