Description
In these two clips, Charlotte Waisman described the range and limits of available roles for Colorado women in the 19th century, including writer and activist Helen Hunt Jackson, physician "Doc Susie", outlaw Belle Starr, and arts patron Anne Evans.
Bell Ringer Assignment
- Briefly describe the four women mentioned in the clips and their accomplishments.
- What options were available to women in the 19th Century in the American West? Which women were able to take advantage of those opportunities?
- What limitations existed on women at this time?
- Extension Question: Most of our thoughts about the Western frontier focus on men. Why do you think the women of this era are mostly unknown or forgotten?
