Video Clip: 400th Anniversary of First Africans in Virginia


Norfolk State University history professor Cassandra Newby-Alexander on the 400th anniversary of the first Africans to arrive in Virginia. In August 1619, colonist John Rolfe recorded that “20 and odd” Africans arrived at Virginia’s Point Comfort - captives on an English privateer ship who were exchanged for food. This marked the arrival of the first Africans in British North America.
