The House elected Paul Ryan (R-WI) as its new speaker, the 54th person to be in the position and the youngest since 1869. Prior to the vote, the day began with a quorum call followed by a farewell address from outgoing Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), who was retiring from Congress on October 31. After the vote, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) addressed members and then handed the gavel to Representative Ryan, who delivered his first remarks as speaker-elect and was sworn in by Representative John Conyers (D-MI), the dean of the House.
