The House debated and passed a bill that settles certain water rights and land issues for the White Mountain Apache tribe in Arizona. There were also several protest votes, also known as "motions to adjourn," over immigration issues, primarily over the Trump administration's March 5, 2018, deadline for ending former President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA allowed some individuals who entered the country as minors illegally to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and to be eligible for a work permit. All of those motions failed. Lawmakers began work on a measure that reauthorizes the FISA Section 702 surveillance program, set to expire on January 19, 2018. Also, Representative Don Young (R-AK) was selected as the new dean of the House, replacing former Representative John Conyers (D-MI), who resigned in late 2017 over sexual misconduct allegations.
