House Session - January 3, 2021

The House met for a brief pro forma session and came back later to adjourn the 116th Congress sine die. The House later gaveled in again. Following the opening prayer offered by Representative Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) and Pledge of Allegiance, the clerk of the House announced receipt of certificates of election from the states, and directed a call of the House by electronic vote. The vote was taken in groups of 72 members each, in observance of coronavirus pandemic safety precautions. Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was elected speaker of the House of Representatives for the 117th Congress, in a 216-208 vote, with two Democrats voting "Present" and three voting for someone else. She was sworn in as speaker by Representative Don Young (R-AK), the dean of the House. Speaker Pelosi then administered the oath of office to the new members en masse.
