After failing three more times to get the majority 218 votes needed to be elected speaker of the House, Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was elected speaker of the House on the 15th vote. This was the first time since 1923 that the House of Representatives failed to elect a speaker on the first vote. Because there was no speaker, new and returning members of Congress were not sworn in until after the 15th vote. Throughout the proceedings, C-SPAN cameras showed scenes from the chamber floor. Normally, the political majority in the House of Representatives controls the cameras in floor proceedings. The one exception is the day of the election of the speaker, when C-SPAN is allowed to control its own cameras.
