Senators continue work on S 185, The Hatch Act Reform Bill which would allow Federal employees to participate in political activities. The legislation would prohibit federal workers from running for elected office but would allow them to run for party offices such as a delegate to a convention. A similar bill was passed in 1990 but was vetoed by President Bush. Opponents to the bill worry that participation of employees would hurt the image of a professional work force and undermine confidence in the integrity of Government. Agencies concerned with this include the CIA, IRS and the Justice Department. Morning business predominated the session.
