Senate Passes Foreign Aid Package 79-18
Senate Session - January 4, 1996

The Senate began with Morning Business. Morning business is the period of the day when Members may introduce bills or speak on any subject. Today’s discussion centered around the partial government shutdown. Senators from both sides of the isle expressed their concerns about workers not being paid and money being lost. Both made remarks that procedures for reopening the government were moving slowly. Republican Whip, Senator Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, vented his irritation with President Clinton over a recent veto of an appropriations bill regarding the “Marbled Maryland.” Morning Hours was extended and the Senate adjourned.
