Senate Passes Foreign Aid Package 79-18
Senate Session - April 24, 1997

The Senate continued debate on the chemical weapons treaty. Portions of the session were closed to cameras for security reasons, with a closed door session in the Old Senate Chamber for classified material related to the treaty. Members then voted on amendments and approved the resolution ratifying the treaty. The U.S. became the 75th nation to ratify the treaty, which goes into effect on April 29, 1997.
