The Senate advanced a $6.3 billion medical research bill, which includes funding for Vice President Joe Biden’s cancer “moonshot” initiative. The procedural vote on the legislation included the vice president presiding over the chamber. Before the vote, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) acknowledged the vice president’s work on the bill and asked that the cancer provisions of the bill be named after Beau Biden, the vice president’s son who died of brain cancer in 2015.
