The Senate passed the First Step (Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed Safely Transitioning Every Person) Act, amended from its original form (the Save Our Seas Act) by the Senate to serve as the legislative vehicle for the bill. The bill reduces mandatory minimum sentences for many felonies and makes more federal prisoners eligible for early release.
