In a 65-33 vote, the Senate approved a bipartisan bill intended to reduce gun violence. The legislation expands background checks for gun buyers 21 or younger, provides grants to states for “red flag” laws that enable firearms to be temporarily confiscated from people deemed dangerous, and includes money for mental health and school safety. The House of Representatives debated and passed the measure the following day, and President Biden signed it into law on June 25. Members also voted 50-49 to discharge from the Judiciary Committee Jessica Clarke’s nomination to be a U.S. District Court judge for Southern New York.
