Mr. Eilts advised that following a defeat of Iraq by the U.S. military, a defensive military force should be maintained to ward off possible aggression from surrounding Middle East states. He also stated that Islamic fundamentalists are basically on the side of Saddam Hussein, and U.S. troops in the region are only tolerated by the population of Saudi Arabia. Mr. Murphy stated that a series of changes in the power balance in the Middle East, due to a U.S. military defeat of Iraq, may result in surrounding countries' attempts to extend their borders to occupy portions of Iraqi territory. Mr. Lewis endorsed the hypotheses put forth by Mr. Eilts and Mr. Murphy, and stated that a continuing international military presence which includes U.S. troops should be maintained in one or more Middle East states to keep the peace. close
