General Norman Schwarzkopf spoke to reporters on the oil slick in the Persian Gulf being fed by tankers and pipelines in Kuwait. The slick, which had been fed for almost a week, had grown to phenomenal dimensions: it was measured to be nearly 35 miles long. General Schwarzkopf announced that U.S. planes had released “smart bombs” over the oil plants feeding oil into the Gulf in an effort to shut off the source of the oil. He said the mission appeared to be a success, with some areas of sea surrounding the outlet of the oil returning to a blue color after having been utterly black from oil during the previous few days. General Schwarzkopf surmised that Iraqi forces released the oil in order to complicate any coalition forces landing on the shores of Kuwait. close
