Governor L. Douglas Wilder is the first elected African-American governor in United States history. Governor Wilder talked about his own military experiences and related them to the current Persian Gulf war. He first ran for political office because he decided that he could not be critical of government unless he worked to change it. Governor Wilder sees his success as a black politician as a role model. The possibility of a future role in national politics was also discussed. close
