The panelists discussed the emerging democracies in Latin America. They said that the events in Eastern Europe have been overshadowing the importance Latin American struggles for democracy have for the world. Mr. Burstein said that Latin America is often overlooked because America “treats it like its in our own backyard.” Therefore, it seems a little too familiar to be exciting and important. The economic turmoil in Latin America was described as the greatest deterrent to achieving democracy. close
