British historian Niall Ferguson discussed his book Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power, published by Basic Books. Mr. Ferguson argued that the British Empire was one of the world’s greatest modernizing forces responsible for the spread of capitalism, parliamentary democracy, communications technology, and raising the level of education around the globe. He also said that at its peak the empire was taken apart by the shifting global climate and other global empires seeking to expand. The author talked about the modern United States and whether it is viewed by the global community as an empire. He also responded to questions from members of the audience. The event was moderated by Mr. Mead. close
