The Great Bridge
The book describes the 1869 to 1883 project to build the bridge, which spans the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Mr. McCullough relates the story of engineer John A. Roebling, who designed the bridge and of his son, Washington Roebling, who completed the project when his father died during the planning phase. The narrative is recounted against the background of the social and political climate of the era and includes vignettes of such notables as Thomas Edison, William Marcy ‘Boss’ Tweed, and Alexander Graham Bell. A question and answer period followed Mr. McCullough’s remarks.
