The subcommittee heard testimony from John Dunne, assistant attorney general for civil rights, on the budget request and performance of the Civil Rights division of the Department of Justice during the Bush administration.

A watchdog group, the Citizens Commission on Civil Rights, had previously commended the Civil Rights division for advances made in housing and voting rights during the Bush administration. They also said the overall performance of the division, much of it a legacy of the Reagan years, was insufficient to advance the cause of minorities in the U.S. The Civil Rights division requested over $49 million for fiscal year 1992, an increase of $4 million over fiscal year 1992 base requirements. Mr. Dunne said the additional money would go toward the division’s work on voting rights, employment discrimination, and the Americans with Disabilities act. close
