The 2004 Nobel Peace Prize recipient was Wangari Muta Maathai. She was honored at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway for her contributions to sustainable development, democracy, peace and women’s rights in Kenya. This was the first time an African woman has been awarded the Nobel Peace prize. The hour-long event included musical entertainment and an introduction by the leader of the Nobel Committee.
