Democrats responded to the Republican National Convention. Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe spoke about an upcoming television advertising campaign centered on the theme of “Mission not accomplished.” He criticized Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s (R-CA) speech for its lack of compassion. Governor Tom Vilsack (R-IA) described the economic situation in Iowa and the experience of unemployed workers in that state. He blamed President Bush for the loss of 1.8 million jobs in Iowa and the decline in income for working Americans. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) described the Bush Administration’s relation to Halliburton and contrasted that to Sen. Kerry’s plans for dealing with corporate America. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer (D) talked about the loss of jobs and increase in poverty in the U.S. under President Bush. close
