The committee heard testimony on whether to grant most favored nation trade status to China, which had been withdrawn following the massacre of dissenting students in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, in 1989. The award of most favored nation trade status, granted to nations without free market economies, would allow normalized trade relations with the totalitarian country. The Bush administration has supported the renewal of most favored nation trade status on the grounds that the economic relationship between the U.S. and China had taken years and years to build, and is too valuable to justify non-renewal. It also cites actions taken by the Chinese government to prevent exports of products manufactured with prison labor. Opponents of the extension of MFN status cite the human rights abuses continuing in China, and say the U.S. would be condoning such abuses by extending most favored nation trade status. They prefer the extension to be linked to democratic reforms in China. close
