President George H. W. Bush responded to reporters' questions in the Rose Garden of the White House on the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, which had been announced earlier in the day. He expressed warm sentiments for the retiring justice and said the administration did not have a successor to Justice Marshall. He further said the administration would move swiftly to nominate a judge who “believes in the Constitution of the United States.” close
