America and the Courts featured the issues of judicial nominations and possible actions, known as the “nuclear option,” that could be taken if nominations were filibustered.

Recent political advertisements were shown. An ad from Progress for America focused on the qualifications of judicial nominees Janice Brown and Priscilla Owen. An ad from MoveOn PAC protested criticism of the Supreme Court. An ad from People for the American Way criticized judicial nominees and advocated to “save the filibuster.”

The opening portion of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing of Thursday, May 12, 2005 on the nomination of William Pryor was shown. Comments by Senators Arlen Spepcter, Patrick Leahy, Charles Schumer, Jeff Sessions, Edward Kennedy, and Jon Kyl were included. President Bush seated former Alabama Attorney General William H. Pryor on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by a temporary recess appointment. The committee approved his nomination by a party-line vote of 10-8. close
