Herbert Kohl talked about his book She Would Not Be Moved: How We Tell the Story of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, published by New Press. In his book, he argued that the traditional way children have been taught the Rosa Parks story is misleading. The author explained that Rosa Parks' decision not to give up her seat on an Alabama bus was part of a well thought out demonstration, not strictly a personal decision. Herbert Kohl urged teachers to take a closer look at textbooks written for children in order to accurately portray her role and the roles of others in the Civil Rights Movement. Following his remarks, the author responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.
