Attorney General Gonzales and Secretary Chertoff spoke to reporters about congressional reauthorization of the Patriot Act and the president’s request that the act be made permanent before certain provisions were set to expire at the end of the month. Among the issues they addressed were the importance of the act to domestic security, recent revelations about domestic electronic surveillance in pursuit of terrorist activities in the U.S., and the ability of law enforcement officials to conduct terrorist investigations.
