John Tayman was interviewed about his book The Colony: The Harrowing True Story of the Exiles of Molokai, published by Scribner. He described the leper colony on the remote island of Molokai where the Hawaiian government relocated victims of Hansen’s disease from 1866 until 1969. Today, Kalaupapa is a national historical park and many of the remaining Hansen’s disease patients still live there. He was interviewed by Rep. Ed Case.

Rep. Case was among those quoted in an article published by the New York Times on March 27, 2006, about complaints raised by former patients of the colony regarding how their stories were presented in the book. close
