Saddam Hussein was back in a Baghdad courtroom for the first time since starting a hunger strike earlier in the month. His attorneys continued their boycott of the trial for safety concerns, so a court-appointed attorney gave closing arguments in his defense. This portion of the day’s events begins with Saddam addressing the court.

Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants were on trial for crimes against humanity in the killing of 148 people from Dujail . Closing arguments for two of Saddam Hussein’s co-defendants were still ahead. October 16, 2006, a five-judge panel will hand down the verdicts. If convicted, Saddam could face death by hanging. A second trial was planned to start August 21, 2006, for his role in a crackdown on Iraqi Kurds in the 1980s.
