President Bush spoke to reporters about the results of the 2006 midterm elections in which the Democratic Party had won control of the House of Representatives. Control of the Senate remained in question as close election results continued to be counted. He said that he had congratulated the Democratic leadership on their victories and would work with the new Congress to enact legislative programs. He also said that he had accepted Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld’s resignation and had named former CIA Director Robert Gates as his successor. close
