President Bush addressed the nation about his proposals for future U.S. Iraq policy. He outlined a “new way forward” that included raising troop levels the region by 20,000, implementing several economic initiatives, and delegating some powers to the Iraqi government and security forces. In his remarks he took responsibility for mistakes made in past approaches and said that the U.S. commitment to Iraq was not open ended. He also emphasized the need for a strong U.S. presence to avoid regional instability and to foster democratic movements amidst sectarian strife. close
