Limits on the Use of Union Dues

Attorneys talked about a case argued before the U.S. Supreme Court earlier in the day, Washington v. Washington Education Association and Gary Davenport, et al. v. Washington Education Association. The Washington State Supreme Court had ruled that a state law prohibiting the use of dues collected from non-union employees for political activites without their express consent was unconstitutional. The State of Washington and the National Right to Work Foundation, on behalf of 4,000 Washington non-union teachers forced to pay union dues, appealed. Mr. Chappell and Mr. McKenna participated in the case. They discussed the merits of the case, its First Amendment implications, and questions not addressed during the oral arguments.
