Professor Burstein talked about his book, The Original Knickerbocker: The Life of Washington Irving. He said Irving was the first American author to claim writing as his profession. Mr. Irving was best known for his fictional work such as The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle, but Professor Burstein noted that Irving was also the first English-language biographer of Christopher Columbus and that he wrote a multi-volume biography of George Washington. He also served as the ambassador to Spain in the 1830s and traveled throughout the American West. After his presentation the author responded to audience members' questions. The talk was held at Sunnyside, Washington Irving’s home in Tarrytown, New York. close
