Michael Swetnam and Nejib Ayachi made opening remarks at an international conference on security challenges and response strategies for the Maghreb and Sahel regions of North Africa. Following their remarks a panel addressed the topic, “Threat Assessments: Propaganda, Terrorism, and Insurgency.” A second panel then talked about “Response Strategies: National, Regional, and Global.” Among the topics addressed were regional security issues, the spread of fundamentalist Islam in North Africa, international efforts to stem violence, and potential solutions to intability. close
